They had to'remember that during the last twelve months many-things had happened to show the ioree of unity. There wero matters .making it essential..for them to have a united chamber of commerce throughout New- Zealand. He, brought under trio notice of members the ■ conference of .the Int(;rnatibiial Chamber of Commerce of the world, which took place at Eoston, United States of America If it had been found necessarv to have" an international 1 'conference, tlie necossity surely existed for a Now Zealand conferenca to 'liscussmaUers of interest to the Dominion. The next international conference, ho tholight, was to take place at Madrid, aiid Ncv Zealand vould be represented/ They would bnvo to have able representation. A few years ago, he cbntimmd, the chamber brought down a prize scheme. ' That was all very well, as far as it went, but commerce wns becoming a science, and it was true the matter was discussed in the university. Thoy would have to get hold of a man of scholarship, trained in commerce laws, shipping laws, Customs laws, etc. He could place proposals before the Chamber of Commerce", and could' go forward to . the international assemblies 'with'.'suggestions which would prove of benefit far New Zealand. , Referring to the Panama Canal, Mr. Manton said .that it was going to bo a great factor. Steamship companies, seeing tha possibility of trade expansion,; wore cominc forward, and the business men would have to tmtk'o provision for those companies. Wellington stood out on its own with regard to providing for tho steamship companies coming to New Zealand. They had to look at the matter from a New Zealand noint of view, and make every possible stand they' could 1o bring steamship companies here, whore facilities, unequalled south of the Line, wero provided.
