Monro moved: "That take into consideration, with a view to immediate action, the question of widening the Kaiwarra Gorge Road by 12ft., commencing at the tannery and finishing at' the brow of the hi 11..-. .The mover stated that tho read was tho principal in the borough, and it was necessary that it should bo put in repair, and dangerous portions, made safe., The road was dangerous- m parts,'and it' was 'desirable for the council to consider tho question of widening it. The matter of ways .and means could be considered at a later date. Ho suggested that. an. estimate oi tho cost b« obtained. - - * Councillor Lyn'noborg ficcoiided the motion pro forma, and said that he was sorry that he could not support it. Ho admitted that the widening of the road was necessary, but the cost would bo too groat. Tho estimate of tue cost would involve an expenditure of about £26 ss. Tho ratepayers should not bo drawn away from tlio main issue —namely, the drainage and water supply. These were matters of far moro importance than the widening of the road. A letter was received from the secretary of the Wellington Committee which has the arrangements in hand for receiving tho delegates of the Garden Cities and Town Planning Association ot London, asking whether tho council was prepared to assist in promoting lectures to be delivered by tho delegates.

The Mayor said that the matter was 0; more interest to cities, and really did not concern such places as the Oilslow Borough. • Councillor C. Monro moved that the letter be received, and a reply forwarded stating that the council was not prepared to assist financially. Tho .motion, was carried. . Upon the motion of Councillor Alderson, Councillors •C. Monro, Nicol, D. Munro. and the mover were appointed a committee to go into the matter of minimising the lire risks in the borough and report at the next meeting of tho council ' The mover of the motion pointed out that there had been many disastrous fires in the borough during tho past fivo years, and oyer £7000 worth of damage had been done. He thought that a volunteer fire brigade should lie established and a system of alarm bells brought into force. Councillor Alderson gave notice of intention to move at the next meeting of the couucil: "That the council support and assist towards the establishment of a gymnasium at Khandalluh Hall." It was decided to authorise the road foreman to make arrangements with Mr. F. Richardson for some "chips." from the quarry. Porirna Road, for tho purpose of binding tlio metal on the Gorge Road. Upon the motion of Councillor Lynneborg. Mr. Hannah's offer to transfer to the borough, at the borough's expense, tho right-of-way from the Khaiidallah Station gates to Izard Road, was accented with thanks. Upon the recommendation of the Public Works Committee, it was decided to inform tho Executive Committee of the Municipal Association that tlio council is of the opinion that the limit, of "unauthorised expenditure" ho raised from 1 por cent, to 2 per cent, of the genoral rate, as suggested by the Auckland City Council.
