An old resident of Wellington, Captain William Cook, of 81 .Wellington. Terrace, died on Sunday, at tho age of 80 years. Ho was apprenticed to the sea in 1857, being articled to Mr. George Kendall, of Liverpool, on the barque Sorato. He traded in various ships to ( America and tho East, and whilo holding the position of chief mate for the harqucntine Elizabeth, was wrecked on tho coast of Algeria in 1860. Captain Cook obtained command of tho ship S Kgcria in 1869, and also held other \ commands up till 1874. At that date A 3ie resigned, and engaged in engineeri'. ing business till 1888, when ho'sailed $,' for New Zealand, where he joined the fe Union S.S. Company at'tho timo of tlie maritime strike of 1890, trading on the West Coast in the steamers Orawaiti and Kanieri, and ho remained in their servico until 1897. Of a kindly, genial disposition,' he made many fiiends. Mrs. Cook predeceased him' by a year and eight months, but lie leaves two daugh- , tcrs, Mrs. E. A. Dance, of Blenheim, and Mrs. H. Spalton, of 81 Wellington Terrace. Mr. Gordon Kinvig, who is leaving for Melbourno noxt Friday, was the recipient of a handsome present from the members of the Central Cricket Club last evening.
