INTERESTING GATHERING.
OX LINER'IN PORT. ] 'An interesting gathering took ..place on the Star of Victoria yesterday,'prior ] to that.vessel's departure. The gather- ' ing consisted of the wireless 6perators ! in port, to the number of half a dozen, ] who assembled to say good-byo to Mr. C. Pennington, the wireless operator of ! the vessel. Mr. Pennington was the ! • operator who displayed great gallantry ' in sticking to the burning Yolturno last ' year, in mid-Atlantic, and sending out messages for succour. These messages enabled rescue ships to coriio to the aid of tho Volturno, which was crowded with emigrants. Mr. Pennington stuck to the ship to tho last, and then jumped into tho sea. Ho was twenty minutes in the water,before being rescued. Ho is making tho round trip in the Star of Victoria from England,' and this was his first visit to New Zealand. ■ i
