__ $_ ■ BIG WORK AT WAINUI.. Between the lower reservoir at Wai-liuiro-mata and the Wainui Post Office, the big 30-inch cast-iron water main on which the, city depends for the bulk of its water supply * crosses' the tortuous courso of the Wainui Stream twice on ft shingly flat. During May of last year there'were very heavy rain, storms at Wainui, and as the result of floodings a , good deal of scouring took place under the main where it crosses the stream, nnd also at a spot where the'flooded river formed a new channel. _ If similarly severe floods occurred again this year there is every reason to fear that the safety of the .main, would bo jeopardised. Toavert such a possibility the City Council is calling for tenders for tho ..sinking a0r033 the bed.of the stream "of some thirty-four pairs of 12-inch , square reinforced concrete piles, 15ft. in length, each pair of which' "will be encased ill a square block of concrete. Tho concrete blocks are to be erected 30ft. , apart, so that the structure will be over 1000 ft. in length. .On the top of these blocks the ilO-inch. main is to rest safe from . any possible danger from undor- . scouring at this danger point. Tenders for tho work close on May 14.
