A BEAUTIFYING SCHEME

BOWLLNG GREEN AT ORIENTAL BAY. '. The- scheme proposed by residents of Oriental Bay and Roseneath to beautify the old metal quarry alongside the Oriental Bay Kiosk will occupy; the attention of the City Council shortly. Tho quarry, which has been worked out almost, as, as far as is considered safe, with duo respect to the boundaries of property-holders in the vicinity, is really' the northern terminus, of tlio Town Belt. An enormous amount of motal and spoil has been removed from .the spot during the, past quarter of a century. .It was first used in connec- ' tion with the To Aro reclamation contracts for the filling-in of the harbour from a point opposito the lojver end of Cuba Street and along past the back of Stewart's sawmill and the Wellington Gas Company's works, for which purpose a truck-way was built that travelled from the quarry, round Oriental Bay and Clyde' Quay, and then along a trestle-work track to the tip. For over a decade past it has been used as a metal quarry'only, and vast quantities of Second-class blue-stone metal lavo been won from the frowning face. Tho pr6motors of the scheme propose, subject to the consent of the council, to lay out the area in two end-on bowling greens, which will provide a sufficient area for thrco or four rinks each. !As the necessary square is not obtainable to allow of play both ways, it is proposed that tlio two greens should bo available for play on Saturday afternoons, but on' week-days the greens would be used alternately week about. .Tliev would bo also prepared, if a lcaso wero granted to lay down the greens and also beautify tho at present inisightly quarry face by planting flowering creepers. It is held that such a proposition fits in tlio improvements proposed to be effected to tlio waterfront in Oriental Bay, and also with the policy of tho council- in gran ling sports bodies leases of suitable Town Acre, lands for their aesthetic improvement.
