OUR FISHERIES
PROFESSOR PRINCE ARRIVES. (By T«kgrapli.~Pres« ■ Association.) '' ; Auckland, April 7. Professor Prince, Commissioner of the Canadian Fisheries, a post he bas filled with distinction, arrived from Canada by the Marama this morning. Tho professor was met by tbe Minister of Marine, Mr. W. A.. Beddoe (Canadian Trade Commissioner), Mr. G. Allport (Under-Secretary to the Marine Department), and Mr. L. F. Ayson (Chief Inspector of Fisheries). It is Professor Prince's intention to make a- thorough personal inspection of the salt and fresh water fisheries of the Dominion. He will leave by the mid-day express tomorrow in company with Mr. Ayson. They will go down tho Wanganui River,call at Palmerston North, and on to Wellington, where they will obtain the Government, steamer Hinemoa, which
lias been placed at the disposal of Professor Prince for the purpose of "testing tlio waters round the New Zealand coast. Captain Neilsen, of Napier, will lie in charge- of the Hinemoa's trawling. The steamer will proceed down the East Coast of the South Island and then work the Foveau'x Straits grounds and coast round Stewart Island; then the West Coast of the South Island will bo systematically.covered with Tasman Bay and the grounds between Nelson and Wellington to follow. In the same way the East and Wosffc' Coasts of the North Island will be tested and tho cruise, which will last about threeweeks, will end at Wellington. Professor Prince will then turn his attention to the fresh water fish. He will make a special feature of inspecting Lakes Taupo and Rotorua wlwe the Government havo experienced difficulty owing to marked deterioration among 'tho trout. He will also visit "many of tho. principal rivers. Armed with unique knowledge, the professor will draft his report, with such recommendations as he thinkr necessary for the .conservation and improvement of our' fish. It it expected that he will be in the Dominion about two months.
