HUTT DISASTER
EFFORTS TO RAISE £5000 LADIES MEET TO-DAY Arrangements are now well in hand to conduct a big canvass to raise £OUUO | for the sufferers deprived of their breadwinners through tho Upper Hutt disastor. This afternoon a meeting of ladies willing to.assist is called by the Mayoress .(-Urs. J. P. Luke), anil will bo held in tho Mayor's room, 'I'owji Hall, at 3 p.m. A meeting of the Executivo Committee will also be held in the evening, to mako final arrangements for collecting. Tho fund which is being raised by the Mayor has now reached a total of £212 18s. This includes a collection mado by Mr. A. M. Samuel totalling £117 Bs. Cd., aud tho following donations not previously acknowledged:—Mr. J. 11. Foster, £3 35.; Mr. J. W. Copithorno. .£2 2s. A donation of £5 os. has also bcea mado towards tho Relief Fund by Mr. I. M. Wilford, M.1 , . The following additional donations have been received by Mr. A. M. Samuel:—Merchants' Association, £15 los;; Bannatyne and Co., £5 65.; Mr. and Mrs. 0. G. Johnston, £3 35.; A.G.S., £2 25.; CM., 10s.: total, £172. Mr. F. J. Barton, of Barton's Circus, which is at present in Taihape, has written to Mr. Wilford, M.P., expressing his sincere sympathy with the relatives of those who lost their lives. Ho proceeds to state that the circus usually pays its annual visit to Upper Hutt im April 23, but owing to the recent tragedy he could not think of playing there for profit this year. He offers, however, to give a performance at tho Upper Hutt on April 23, in aid of the relief fund, and devote the gross proceeds to that object. Mr. Wilford has written, thanking Mr. Barton for bis generous offer, and accepting tho same, on behalf of fho relatives of tho deceased. The employees of the Gear Meat Company, Petone, have contributed £20 16s. towards the relief fund, including £S 13s. from the fellmongery hands. The Upper Hutt Town Board has passed a resolution in appreciation of ,tho generous action. ' . In.spito of. a heavy fall «sf rain His Majesty's Theatre, Petone, was crowded last evening, when tho Maseotte Company tendered a benefit performance in aid of the Belief Fund. The following contributed, to the programme:— Messrs. Lockvcr and Simpson, J. Campbell, W. Dewhiirst, J. and W. M'Ewan, B, Sims and tho littlo Misses Watson and Pollock.
