LAST OF THE DEVON.
REMOVAL IN EARLY PROSI'ECT. Although sadly battered by tits sea, tlio wreck of the steamer Devon still remains on tho reef off Penearrow Point, but its complete destruction is now in early prospect. .As it lies the wreck constitutes a certain danger to navigation, inasmuch as it shuts off tlio lowlevel Penearrow light mi Motae) angles of approach. But for this the work of destruction might very welt be left to tho sea, for tho disintegration of the wreck is proceeding apace. Tko Sal* vors' completed their work a couple of weeks ago, and between their activities and the inroads of the sea- only a, remnant of tho vessel now renia-ms. Tho mainmast has fallen, and practically the ivhole after-part of the steamer has disappeared. , In addition to that .tlio hull is' ripped open from -stein to stern along the bottom, and has perceptibly settled down. The -usual way -of disposing of a. wreck in such circumstances is to blow it up, but it is thought not unlikely that tho shattered remnant of the Devon may bo offered to tlio Defence authorities fov a target. She would afford good practice from Fort Dorset, and as she lies about two hundred and fifty yards out from- tho low-level Pcncarrow light the. shooting would probably bo fairly safe. In any ease, whatever the manner of her final fate may bo, all that remains of tlio Devon will very shortly disappear from sight.
