SERIOUS MATTER.
RAILWAY FREIGHT REDUCTION. (Br Telourarh—Freis AMOolattoa.s Auckland, April, 4. Tho Hon. James Allen, iiiterviswod mi the subject of railway rates and finance, tsaid: "The alteration of tho laihvay rates has to be seriously considered. Personally, I do not think it passible to reduce tho rates, considering the increase in the annual cost of upkeep. As Minister of Finance, I do not jee how we are going to get the railway revenue which I anticipated for ,the year just ended. This is largely, owing to the loss of revenue due- to the folly of strikes. It. will have to eome out a little better than it looked, two or' three months ago, but the revenue will bo nothing like what wo ought to hava got froni the railways. The Auckland Exhibition has pulled ns up a bit, but not to the extent anticipated."
