THE POTATO MARKET.
SCARCITY IN WINTER. Tho South Canterbury correspondent of'the Chrislchurch "Press" writes:— Contrary to expectation, potatoes are likely enough to bo particularly scarce before the winter finishes; they seem to have employed themselves during the last couple .of'■ months in inventing or 'Catching new and worse complaints. A large quantity of the early sorts rotted in tho ground, the given reason "too much wet weather"; next others had a touch of so-called "Irish blight," mould under tho'leaves, rotting stalks, and so on. . At Orari Bridge I was taken into several fields' to soo different stages of the newest development. In this disease a potato field may be looking in lust-class condition, but within three or four days almost every leaf will have become black and shrivelled, and fallen to the ground. Then the stalks begin to decay and a whitish fungus appears on the roots. Many sorts are affected alike, but' I aiotk; (that tho "blight-resisting" variety called "Skerry Blue" suffers'differently from the rest. The loaves blacken-, and fall as before, biit tho stalks remain upright afterwards, looking most woebegone, like trees in winter. .. . ~ Tho, world exacts from you its toll of worry and work—there's no new! for you to at!d to it. Make things as easy as you can—"Victor" Vats lighten labour and help increase the quality of the cheese. "Victor" Vats have that (sloping bottom which caused such a sensation in the . cheese-makiug world. Every factory should, have "Victor" Vats, they are built for efficiency and satisfaction. Write for particulars." Albert J. I'.irton, l'lmnbor, Carterton.—Advt. Woods' Great Peppermint Cure For Coushs and Colds never fails, Is. 6d.*
