THE TURF.

NAPIER PARK MEETING

BIRKLINE WINS BIC EVENT. . (By Telegraph.—Special Eeporter.l ■ Napier, , March 14 : The Napier Park Autumn ■ Meeting concluded to-day in beautiful weathar., There was a large attendance, and speculation was very brisk. Tho totalisator investments amounted to £20,305. as against £12,807 for. tho second day of the autumn meeting last year, and £36,985 for both days, against £25,258 last year. A feature of tho racing today was the consistent forrn of A. Oliver, who rodo three more winners, making six at the meeting.' J. Chaafe had his shoulder dislocated. In the Telegraph Handicap there was a lot of bustling at tho 'start, and Berg's rider, R. J. Horn, came down, and was cut about the head. Backers opened badly in the Hack Hurdles by making Caher 'Davon favourite. Tho chestnut was very unruly at the barrier, and after going through onco, he whipped round when it rose, and took no part in the race. Pikiho and Hatana made the pace a. cracker. At tho half-mile tho former was out by himself, but here Hurakia moved up to him, and was level at the last fence. He then had matters all his own way, and won comfortably. The winner is a very likely sort, and has now won three times out of four starts. Hatana was offered for, salo after the race, but was passed in. Okahu fell at the back of the course, and J. Chaafe had his shoulder put out. ■ Thero wore no defections from tho Telegraph field, and Iliad's Hero came in for solid support. After a good start, Iliad's Hero, Royal Scout, and Hima took up the running from Pursefiller. Entering the straight, the favourito hung , out, and Hima gained an advantage, while Montana was stopped. Whnkahoki came through half-way down the running, and after a good finish won by a neck from Pursenllcr, with Hima and-Montano in that order. Iliad's Hero and Berg got interfered with at thp barrier.

Birkline, with Oliver in' the saddle, was well supported for tho Close Memorial Handicap, and the Gisborno horso scored bj\tho narrowest of margins from Fair Rosamond and Bertrada. The latter was in charge at tho half-mile, Jjiit in a hard finish Oliver got the, topweight up in t'ime to win by a head. Red Book, the. actual favourite, ran' a good race to the turn for home, where ho faded out of it. Vi and The Hague were left at the ; barrier.. Birklinc's form was a vast improvement on his first day's showing.

Tavistock was" the best backed in the two-year-old event, .but La Favourita' was a better mare to-day. She had the field in trouble from tho fall of the iflag. Tete-a-Tcte began, very smartly, and she and La Favourite, always ' 'id the top-weight doing his best. Blackall ran a great race, and should be heard of at tho back end of the season. The Karamu pair Hymen and Isiimonoha arc both backward.

As Braeburn was a fresh horse, and had Oliver in the saddle, the- public supported •him strongly in tho High Weight Handicap, tho distance of which suited him well. Mysteriach acted tho rolo of pacemaker till tho bottom of the straight, when Triezo collared him. Shortly afterwards Oliver brought tho favourite along, and in the finish ho won nicely by a length. Tatimi was close up third, and Mysteriach ' was fourth. ■Merriwa, who is standing up to racing, showed pace for half a mile, and may score before the season >is much further-advanced. 'Sin Daniel ran badly.

Anguish and Ngarua were the only -horses backed in the Scurry, and they finished first and second. Formulate, who is now touched in the wind, was a poor third, and tho rest were beaten off. Tho winner got the benefit of a moving start, which materially assisted him to win. Ngarua "was very soro aud took some time to find his feet.

The withdrawal of Makara, Adroit, and The Nile from tho open sprint event caused Blue Lake to go out at a very short price, but the result proved that; though the brown mare won, it was anything but a certainty for her, and both Our King and Day Fly put up just as good performances. Lowe, on tho favourite, anticipated the rising of the barrier, but Our King soon headed him off, and led. till the bottom of the straight, where Blue Lake and Day Fly joined.in. ,■ Overotho last furlong tho trio raced abreast, and in turn each bad their names called. Blue Lake got the verdict, but it was only by the narrowest of margins. Labour Day was fourth, and tho other pair were beaten off.

.:..Kimbombi showed that his win on the first day was no fluke by v.again scoring in the Stewards' Stakes. Mr. H. M. CampbelPs Merriweo gelding is very well just now, and ho should bo a good stake-earner, over fences this season.
