ROWING REGATTA.
ACCOUNT OF THE RACING. BAD WEATHER SPOILS SPGRT. The Wellington Rowing AesDciation were again unfortunato in tho weather on Saturday, and had to/hold, the, annual regatta on the Ngahaiiranga tii Koro-Koro course. A stiff northerly w:as .blowing, and tho water was not good for rowing; nevertheless tlie racing 'was- very good, and. in the majority'of events the finishes . wero close and exciting. Thero was only a small attendance, of the public, l the urn- ' pire's boat carrying: about' thirty spectators. The rae?3 wero"got off well to time, and go9d entries ■wero received. Marshall had an advantage over Sharpe by having the iii3J<le rowing; but the Union man was not' to bo denied sscoml 'honours. About' three hundred yards from homo he came with • a beautiful spurt, but could, not'overhaul Hadfield, ivho finished first by two lengths. The eight crews'/for the majority of the time were racing close together, and the finish was i ; ery, exciting. Star beat the starter, but' when fifty yards had been gone, the crews were in even lin.?. Picton began to show out, but Wairatt and Canterbury pulled tho crew back to piace. Then Star, Avon, Wairau, and Canterbury had a desperate struggle for" the lead. Canterbury and Avon wero' leading till 100 yards from the ■ post, when Canterbury's stroke collapsed, and Avon, Wairau; '.and Star fought out the finish, the former getting home a canvas,, with half a length separating second and'third. '■■'.'■ Tim crack Wanganui team, Union, had the rac? their own way, and rowed beautifully throughout, keeping at thirtytwo to the minute, to Star's faster stroke of thirty-five. It was the steady, even stroke that told, and Union went past the post five lengths to the good, finishing up with a pretty spurt. Star stuck at ir, but were never ablo to.extend their rivals. Tho two Star crews were the first to show out, and at half-way were wdl ahead of Avon and Petone, with Aramoho o.way back. ' At three-quarters of a mile the Star No. 2 and Petone wero beaten, and Avon had put in a challenge against Star No. 1. The leading crew 'was equals to an emergency call, and had no diffiwinning by about three lengths, with Aramoho a. length away, third. Time, Bmin. 2 l-ssec.' '

Star had come to grief, having gone ovet a rock, and put •n. hole in the bottom, of their! shell. ;Tho : .-water was- very rough-for Union, and "their sfa-pke: caught a crab, .and was un'able to recover. Nearly ithreo lengths was •lost ,to them by this, and Sumnor took up second place. It looked as if Wellington was safe to win, but 400 yards from homo Union on pace. Pulling with a long, untiring stroke' they gradually crept «p,' and overhauled Sumner. Then it was, a jieck-and-neck go between, Wellington aid - Union. Wellington strove valiantly to -keep their lead, but the superior rowing .•of the visitors told, and they shot across I the winning line a.'.bare half-length .to itho good,.with Sumner a length away, ■ thml.
