FIRES.
. A fire broke'out early on Saturday' morning in a single story dwelling at 11 Vogel Street and was not extinguished until considerable damage had been .done to the house and contents. The .house was occupied by Mr. Thos. Cross and owned by, Mr. Ray, of Mangatainoka. The fire is believed to have originated from the ignition of matches by •;rate "in a cupboard. : Shortly after 7.30 o'clock on Saturday evening an' 'eight-roomed 'house 'on the Back Waiwetu Road,r.liower Hutt, owned by'Mr..€hasV>W:'Brown and occupied occasionally by Messrs.. Heggie Bros., dairymen, was totally destroyed by fire. Being out. of. ".water range , ' and, as a fair wind was .blowing, the efforts of the Hutt Fire Brigade were of no avail. Some neighbours formed a bucket brigade, and; with"; water brought 'from a creek, managed to ! save the- outbuildings. v Mr. Brown's house (next door) had a narrow escapo, but a clump of ■ trees and the.firemen's efforts saved.it from the flames. Thcbuilding was-in-sured in.the Commercial Union office for £300. Mr. W. Heggio estimates hie at about'£2o, as his effects .were not covered by insurance.
