RADIUM PROPOSAL.
"PUSHING'IT ATPALMERSTON. (By IWoirauh.—Hrenial OorrooßondenU Palmerston,'February 9. The activity behind the "Radium Institute movement is increasing. A number of citizens who are enthusiastic on the question held a meeting on Saturday to discuss taking action to secure tho necessary funds. Mr. J. . Goring Johnston was voted to tho chair. _ Tho meeting formed itself into , a Provincial Committed, with Mr. Johnston as chairman, to take tho initial' steps.' Dr. Martin consented to draft a circular giving.data regarding- tho,efficacy of rifidiuni as a curativo agent. An executive was appointed to.deviso a plan of campaign and repoi'tito a future, meeting. A public meoting will bo called to further the movement.' Mr. H. G. Baguall was appointed secretary.. A deputation from tho meeting interviewed.tho Prime Minister when on his way to Auckland by the Main Trunk express. Tho necessity for a Radium Institute was explained by Dr. Martin, and Mr. Johnston pointed out that activo steps were being taken locally to raise funds and thorq was every prospect of a substantial amount being speedily | obtained. The promoters hoped to have a sufficient sum available to'enable a supply of radium to be purchased while Dr. Martin was in England.' The Prime Minister indicated ' his sympathy with the movement, and 'stated that ho is giving the matter hia attention, and Cabinet will also consider it. ' • ■ . . ' Several other large amounts have been received towards'thefund, which now totah £634. The latest donors are:— Mrs. Johnston, of "Highden," Awahuri, £200: Messra.' J. Goring Johnston, J. H. P. Strang, and W. Strang, £50 each; Leary Pharmacy, £25; and Mrs. 'Ashworth, £10.
