Inquiries made by the police elicited tho fact that sho had applied for registration, but \yas refused. Tho girl, however, maintained 1 that she had beenregistered, but had not received her license. She was then allowed two days' leave to go to Wellington and obtain her license, but did not return', and it is believed that she is working in another hotel as barmaid. ' ■ The magistrate,'in giving judgment, took into consideration the fact that the offence had been an unintentional one, and fined defendant £1 and costs, remarking that it would be advisably in future for hotelkeepers,- when engaging barmaids, to insist on the production of their licenses. .
