Instances of high house rents in Auckland wore quoted by some of the City Councillors nt last evening's meeting. during the discussion 011 the workers' dwellings, scheme, says our special correspondent. Mr. J. Court said that not long ago. the M orks Committee of the council camo across a case in which 14s. I>d. a week was being paid in the city for four or five-roomed houses with conveniences that "were not fit for dogs." Ho had, he declared, often seen dogs aiid horses which were provided with hotter housing. Mr. TudehopD saitl that, he could not see where the justification for the cry regarding rents came in. He knew of several workers who were paving 110 more than ton shillings a woek for their houses, which afforded fair accommodation. He also cited _ the ca3o of 0110 house of seven or eight rooms in Franklin Road, worth probably £GSO, which was let for £1 a', week. The Now Zealand Express Company's Argyll motor lorry has now covered nearly 25,000 miles in two yenrs' service without any breakdown. It has mado frequent long journeys up country, sometimes of .between 200 and 300 miles in the round trip, carrying full loads all the time, and' crossing the Paekakariki and Rimutaka- saddles.
