SOUTHLAND CROPS.
LARGE AREA UNDER POTATOES. Tho potato blight has also made its appearanco in parts of South Otago as well as down . through the Southland districts, though in travelling last week over a very largo part of Southland, tho correspondent of tho "Press"- did not see that any great damago had been caused by the blight: Ari unusually largo tojt'al area appears to have been put'under potatoes this season, and there should, with favourable woathc'r from' now on, bo many good average; yields. A very extensive total area has Lecn put under rape, turnip, and swedes, and there havo been splendid strikes in nearly every instance. The root; crops for winter and spring feeding aro just now giving every promise or' exceptionally heavy yields.. The harvesting of. tho early-sown oat crops has commenced in the Balclutha, Clinton, Brydone, Edendalo, and Nightcaps districts, but the great bulk of tho: oat crops-in Southland are still quite green,' and in many instances they aro short in the straw aiity uneven. .There are many good crops to ho seen, and those that.aro still green will grow/a lot yet, but -the all-roun davcrage yield per aero, for Southland this season will be a long: but the all-round average yield per aero for Canterbury. Nearly all the grass', paddocks through Southland 'ire rich-; with a superabundance of feed, and cattlo and sheep are looking in great condition.
