FEILDING SHOW.

FINE DISPLAY OF FAT STOCK* RAIN MARS OPENING DAY, (By Tfllecrapli.—Speoial Heporter.)Feilding, Feb.-uary 8. - The tenth • Feilding Snow opened on the 'racecourse horo to-day.' Rain fell at intervals all day, and consequently • the attendance, was. very small. Thero were, oh appearances, fewer peoplo present than on .any previous first day. However, it is expected that it will require very bad weather to; keep- the crowd away to-inbrrow, wlijch is People's Day. As an exhibition of stock the show is a great success, and as a function at which to display stock it is entirely satisfactory, as everything has been well arranged.by the association. The association is still a 'very > young hody, but it has made excellent progress, par'ticularly in the last five years. Almost from tho commencement agriculturists recognised that Feilding would one day be an important show. • Of recent years it has been koked upon ;.as one of the'chief autumn gatherings tin the North Island.' True, it is'held to; Palmerston North where the ;. Metropolitan Show takesplace, but the (two do not clash, 'as Feilding comes at . n. time of tho year which gives it a dis r I tinction from the bigger event:, Tho '■ Feilding Show stands. out as a great exhibition of fat stock, particularly fat lambs. It is usually, of course, strong in'other sheep divisions, as the district is a sheep-raising locality. Tho prosi"dent ofitue association this year is Mr. J. H. Perrett, of Sanson..

i The Show Judges. The judges for the show .-are:—Jump- ,' ing ''• competitions, saddle horses, and ponies: ' Mr. A; Selby, Otahuhn.' Harness horses and driving competitions, Mr. A. 'Reid, Hastings.. Draught horses, . Mr. .A. 'Alexander, Now Plymouth. Fat cattle , and Shorthorns, Mr. R. Stevens, Dannevirke. Herefords, Mr. H. J. Dagg, Mauriceville. Ayrshires, Mr. H. H. Olsen, Egmont Village. M'Kcnzie, Masterten. Romnoy ewes, Mr. P. Mungavin, I'orirua. Romney rams, Mr. R. Gray, Masterten. Lincolns and Lcicosters, W. Little, iWaipawa. Sou'thdowns, Mr. G. Eliott, Hastings. Pigs, Mr. R. Pefrett, Sanson. ■.'.Fruit,' etc., Mr. J. Weighttnari, 'Awahuri. Dairy produce, Mr. C. H. Dunford, Makino. . Home industries, Mesdames J. M'Eelyio' (Carnarvon) and W.J. Phillips (Sanson).

■'-■■" Judging the Horses. Not by any means all the hofsos wero ' judged to-day, but among thoso which' ■ camo before the judges wore entries of the best kind. ' There were,' of course, a.few-which it was useless taking to any show." Iu respect to the. horses entered under the head,of ,thoroughbred, the association met the usual poor response.. For years jail the associations.' have obtained entries of this-kind/ The two thoroughbred stallions entered'belonged to Mr. R. iWellcr'i and thoy were awarded tho first aid. the second honours:: The-saddle i horses composed a most.creditable array,

but there was a tendency to over-weight in somo of the animals entered as weightcarrying hacks. A fine--maro entered by Mr. H. J. Bailey was-adjudged the most; suitable maro, for the purpose of breeding remounts. Sho had a "foal at foot, and the youngster, too, was decked with a red ticket. Mr. T. Andrews's Aeroplane was chosen as tho stallion most, suitablo for . breediug carriage horses, and tho maro selected as tho best breeder in this department was Mr. AV, R. M'Williams's Bonnie 8011. Mr, AV. T. Bailey's Ruby got first as a single-harness horse.' . ' There was a nico lot of ponies shown, and firsts were won by tho following:—Messrs. R. T. Sanson, M. Hofen, C. Davidson, C. F. Purton, and Miss Dorothy-Levin. Thero might easily have been a greater number of draught horses entered, but the competition was /fairly keen; and most of the entries very good. Surrey AVarriar, a horse from the estate of the late Mr. H. F. Carr, won tho draught stallion championship, and Mr. E. ShoTt's Lonsdale Again, and Mr. P. Blair's Duko of York were second and third respectively. First place in the class for younger draught stallions, goes to ■■ Taranaki, with Mr. J. D. Mitchell's. Martin., Once more, Mr. Short was second, •- and tho third went' to Mrs. J. D.' Ormond. In the' remaining draught sections judged Mr. Short was very successful, winning five firsts. Mrs*. Ormond, Mr. R. L. Levin, and Mr. J. F. Bishop also gained firsts. The two years old draughts looked very well, but somo of'tho yearlings were not well grown.

Tho Cattle Classes. _ Among tho cattle a very satisfactory improvement was noticeable in the dairy stock, not that tho 'improvement is great, but a steady-riso in quality is being maintained. Tho fat cattle classes brought out rather few entries. Some of tho fat bullocks were •. beautiful beasts. In tho fat division, Mr. E. Short was t'he chief and most successful exhibitor. He gained five firsts, but in two classes had to tako second placo to Mr. H. M'Kcnzie. 'Tho-only pedigreo Herefords were some from Mr. Short's fine stud, and these 'wero all awarded prizes. A couple of shorthorn bulls, both belonging to Mr. W. Gibson, wero penned, and each merited a prize. The Ayrshire bull .championship- was awarded Mr. J. M'Farland's Lord Glenham 111, and the other'firsts and tho cow championship awarded went to Mr. D. Buchanan. There were not many Jerseys. Mr. H. H.: Hunt's Twylish Pledge was declared tlio champion bull, and Mr. S. R. Lancaster's Little Champ gained the femalo ribbon, and tho other firsts fell to Messrs. S. R. Lancaster, Tom M'Kenzie, C. G. C. Dermcr and H. Stratford. Mr. W. I. Lovelock showed tho champion Holstein bull, and Mr. G'. Hopping the champion cow. Mr.- E. James also was a first prizo winner. v Firsts in grado. dairy cattle wore won by Messrs. S. R'. Lancaster, H. J. Lancaster, A. Lancaster, P. Nesbit, and Mrs. Annie Banks.

/ The Sheep Sections. There was a very fine display of sheep. Tho.fat sorts wero, present in strong forcb,, and made an imposing display of tho great quality which this' and other districts can raiso for export. Romneys also wero numerically, antfcso, too, ,wero SfluJ^idqwnsjV'but' I tie competition 1 among raisers of tho other breeds, was rather small. The freezing classes found Messrs. W. Reid and Sons, the Feilding "breeders, once moro to tlio fore witli a considerable number of high-class entries. They Won firsts for longwool cfos3 wethers, 21 months, for wethers which are to* bo exported, for.heavy Down wethers,'fpr heavy longwool wethers, and for fat ewes, and annexed several minor .prizes; Messrs. A: E. And-,A.. Symes also wero very successful in tho same division. The firsts for Down cross wethers under 21 months, for maiden Down cross ewes, for'maideu longwool owes, for heavy lorigwojol'wethers and ewes, and several lesser 'awards; fell to their lot. Other firsts in the division were won by Messrs. J. Strang and James Knight. The fat lambs mado one of the finest divisions in tho wholo'show, and it was particularly pleasing to note the high standard of excellence in the export classes, Hero tho Downs must bo particularly' mentioned. Some of the fat lambs were disqualified for overweight, and a similar bah was placed upon a few of the sheep'entcred: Members of tho association wero delighted with the exhibition of fats in general, Rooking upon the display as ono of tlio greatest' advertisements tho district could possibly, receive.'. The competition in tho lamb classes was very keen. The most successful exhibitors wore the ■ Highden Estate, Mr. James Knight, Mr. Jas. Shortall, and Mr. Basil Thomson. There wero. some fine Romneys entered, in classes for farmers' flock' sheep and a few Lincolus. Messrs. W. Reid and Son, W. Gibson, and Joseph Corpo won tho Romney prizes in these competitions, and Mr.W.A. Brewster beat Messrs. Reid in the Lincolns.

The purebred sheep wero decidedly good. A number of noted Romney breeders met in competition and the contest was so keen that r\ono had' by. any means a monopoly in the awards. Perhaps the. finest Romney on the ground was Mr. P. .Mungavin's 33 mouths' old ram,- which: was awarded the championship. It was a beautiful sheep in typo and. other points, and gained a great deal of admiration during the day. Mr. Joseph Corpo had a number of nice Romneys penned and four, firsts fell to. him. -Messrs; 6. E. Allen, A. E. Sandilands, ■L. Pleasants, and \V. B. Allen also were awarded firsts. The Lincolns, tho Border Leicesters, and tho English Leicesters came forward only in small numbers.

Mr. E.'Bremner was the only exhibitor of-Lincoln rams and Sir. W. T. London had a walk-over in tho Lincoln owo classes. Mr. .L Dowthwaite won all tho Border Leicester prizes unopposed, and Mr. S. E. Lancaster was unbeaten in the English Leicester classes. Mr. Lancaster's only opponent was Mr. E. Breraner. Thero wero many pens of finp Southdowus. Tho ram championship was secured by Mr. James Knight and tho ewe championship by Messrs.-, Ellis Bros. Mr. S. E. Lancaster took five firsts and Ellis Bros, three firsts.

A Scarcity of Piss. The response to the association's catering for pig breeders was very poor. The entries numbered very few. Some of tho animals, liowever, were of very good quality, and in view of the fact that there are in tho district many lino specimens of the vnrious breeds, K is a great pity that tho, classes provided for them by the society are not better patronised. Mr. P. J. Small took three firsts with his Yorkshires, and two firsts were awarded Mr. J. G. Cobbo for his Berkshiros. Messrs. "W. H. Morris and V. Jopscn won in the classes for baconors, and tho best sow and litter were shown by Mr. J. M'Farland.

Ring Competitions. In tho jumping ring there were more than tho usual number of frills. One of tho riders in tho hunters' competition was thrown 'at tho last hurdle, and when tho girls were riding thero.wero several spills. Some of tho jumping was very good, particularly that of Mr. J. ,T. Bryce's Twilight, who got second in'thn maiden hunters' event. Thoresults from tho ring arc:— Driving.—Miss Jessie Campbell, 1; Mrs, 11. M. How, 2; Miss J. Angus,,3.
