Magistrate's Court today three men employed at the Kaitangata coal mine, a trucker and two miners, were charged with taking smoking materials into a prohibited part of the'mine, in faco of tho provisions of the Coal Mines Act. 1908. The men •wore D. Bennie, A. Wilson, and L. Billett. Bennie and Wilson, who had been , caught with cigarette papers and tobacco in their possession, both pleaded guilty, and were fined £5, with costs ,£2 9s. Billet , ;, who did not appear, was fined tho maximum penalty of £10, with costs £3 10s. The magistrate (Mr. Bartholomew) commented severely on,the seriousness of the offences, more particularly in the case.-of .Billett, who carried lneifer matches into tho mino after he had been warned against it two days previously. Hβ characterised tbe offence as a crime for which a penalty of. £10 was inadequate, and which should bo punished with .imprisonment.; , . ;
