BUSY DAY IN PORT.
Yesterday the Harbourmaster (Captain JohnstonT and his staff of. pilots had a particularly heavy day's work. Operations commenced at 4.30 a.m., and for some of tho staff finished; at 7 p.m., but Captain Johnston was still busy well on into the- evening. During the day no fewer than nine, vessels required the services of-pilots. The vessels concerned were:—Whakatiine, 3686 tons; Star of India, 4602 tons; King Cyrus (ship), .631 tons; Aorangi, 2782 tons; Volga, 2851 tons; Ayrshire, 4962 tons; Paritutu (dredge), 233 tons; Sussex, 8627,. tons; and Moana, 2414 tons. These represent a gross tonnage of approximately 38,323 tons. _ • Captain Johnston mentioned to.a reporter that,tho month of January pro-' mises to eclipse all past records in the history of the. port in connection with the legitimate,trade of shipping. In .defining tho word "legitimate" as used above, ho stated that some records were established during the strike, but most of the work accomplished then was done free of cost. This was not what would ordinarily be-termed "legitimate" trade.
