Half of the faco liad been blown away, and a brick had been tied round tho neck. Deceased's gun was found near llio body. Pattison camo from Palmerston North ten weclts ago, arid was employed by D. B. Lethbridge, sheep fanner, Ngaturi. Other employees on tho farm did not notico anything unusual in doee.ased's manner on Saturday night. The body was recovered in 4ft. of water one hundred yards from the wharo, STRONG SWIMMER DROWNED. Auckland, January SO. John Oronstciii, aged 21 years,'was drowned at Poiisonby <m Saturday afternoon. He was last seen at 3 p.m. sitting on a rock in his bathing dress. Later his friends wero alarmed as he had not returned home, and the police wero advised. In tho meantime two young women found tho body floating near 'the f shore and dragged it on the beach and applied restorative measures. Though subsequently assisted by a doctor, thoir efforts to restore life were futile. Deceased was a strong swimmer, and. it is supposed lio was seized with a fit. JAMES DOBIE'S DEATH. Cisjjdrnsi January 26, James Murray Dobie, land.salesman, aged forty-one y'tj&is, ditfd suddenly. Ho. had been drinking' heavily. At tho inquest tho medical evidence suggested .that death was possibly due to corrosive poisoning, and tho inquiry was adjourned pending a report from the Government Analyst, on the contents of deceased's stomach. An empty bottle which had contained a patent medicine, of which, according to the medical testimony, phosphoric acid was a constituent part, was found near deceased's bod at his home. THE DENTAL OPERATION. WaimatOj January 26. George Leeder, a master plumber, who recently camo to Waimate from Christehurch, died yesterday at lfis residence whilst chloroform was heing administered for the purpose of a dental operation. Ho loaves a widow and a young family. EXPLOSION OF A LAMP. Ohristchurclt, January 26, Last night Mrs. Golan, of Harewood Road, was injured by the explosion of a kerosene lamp. The explosion occurred while sho was sitting at a table by tho lamp. Her faco was severely burned, and she was taken to the hospital, where it was reported to-day that no serious results were anticipated. DROWNED IN WANGANUI IIIVER. Wanganut, January 26. James Stevenson, ,i resident of East Town, was drowned in the Watiganiti River at Makirikiri at seven o'clock this evening. Ho fell overboard from a launch. The body has not been recovered. Stevenson is supposed to ha a married man.

THE HULK FATALITY
The body of the coal-hulk-kecper, James Wa'torstreot, who was drowned in tlio harbour 011 tho night of January 18, whilst endeavouring to shackle a chain to a 'buoy, was found in tho vicinity of the Taranaki Street Wharf yesterday. At an early hour in tho morning' the night-watchman - "on the wharf noticed tho body in tho .Water near tlio wlmrf, and with the aid of a con stable it was recovered, and removed to the morgue, where it- was identified. An inquest is to be held at thu Courthouse to-day.
