CARDINAL RAMPOLLA DEAD
A DISTINGUISHED PRELATE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopj-rislit Rome, December 17. Cardinal Rampolla is dead. He had been ill for somo time, and had been sulfering from angina pectoris. Flo died suddenly. , His Holiness the Pope is overwhelmed with grief, and has ordered that tho greatest honours bo shown to the dead Cardinal. Cardinal Rampolla was hitherto regarded as the Pope's successor. (Roc. December 19, 0.10 a.m.) Rome, December 18. The lato Cardinal Rampolla's sittingroom was transformed into a chapel, where leading ecclesiastics paid their last tribute. The burial will take place at St. Peter's on Friday.
Cardinal Mariano Rampolla (Count del Tindaro), Arch-Priest of the Vatican Basilica, was born iii 1813, at Polizzi, in the Sicilian diocese of Cefalu. Having completed his studies in the C'aprmir.a College at Rome, and having taken holy orders, he studied diplomacy at the Collogo of Ecclesiastical Nobles, and in J875 was
appointed councillor to the Papal Ntmciaturo at Madrid.. Two voars later ho
was recalled to I!omo and appointed Secretary of the Propaganda for Oriental Rites and for Extraordinary .Ecclesiastical Affair?. Consecrated titular Archbishop of Heracles in 1883, he returned, to Madrid as Nuncio, but was shortly afterwards created' cardinal and anno'inted to the Papal Secretaryship of-State. Rightly or wrongly, lie was held personally responsible for (lie rapprochement with France and Russia and the opposition to the Powers of the Triolc Alliance and this attitude had its effect mi his carcor when Leo XIII died. Rnmpolk was undoubtedly tho favourite among the Papabili cardinals; but tho veto of Austria was interposed, and tho votes of the. Sacred College fell to Cardinal Sarto, who on August -1, 1903, became Popo as Pius X. Cardinal Bampolla at once resigned his officii as Secretary of State, being succeeded by Cardinal Merry del Val, and ceased to play any consnicuous part in tho Curia.—"Encycioprtcdia Britanniea."
