SIEFANSSON'S SCHOONER LOST. CRUSHEDIN~THE ICE. By Tclesr«?h-frejs A&soetation-CoDyrlgM London, December 10. The auxiliary schooner Mary Sachs, which Stefansson thought was safe at Colletson's Point, was caught and crushed to pieces in the" ico off the coast of Alaska at the end of November.
All the provisions and scientific insh'umonts were lost. It is presumed that the crew is safe.
Disaster has followed disaster to Stefanssou's Arctic Expedition. First of all his exploring ship, the Karluk, was jammed in tho ice, mid had to he repaired. This was in August. On November 7 it was reported that the explorer had reached his winter quarters on Herschcll Island, after a trying experience with the ico off Northern Alaska. On November IS leports were cabled that the expedition was feared to have encountered disaster. On November 20 came a rumour that tho Belvedere, his supply ship, had been lost. A later message, on November 2!), reported that tho supply schooner Mary'Sachs had been caught in the ice. Yesterday ■ came- the news that a landing parly he'd lost 1 the Karluk in a fo;;, and their' whereabouts' we're unknown.
