Raymond Hep-orth, a claim for £1500 ■ for alleged fraudulent misreprcsentar tion on a sale of shares in, tho 6oW«n : Bar Scheelite Company, was continued at the Supremo Court to-day before Mr. Justice Bemiiston and a special jury of twelve. His Honour put tho following issues to tho jury:—(l) Did defendant represent to plaintiff that thoro iwro only 2200 shares in tho company available for sale, -and that defendant had underwritten tho whole- of tho shares, amounting to £2100? (2) If "Yes," was tho plaintiff induced hy tho said representations or either of them to buy shares? (3) "What damages, if any, is plaintiff entitled to recover from tho defendant? After one? and a half hours' retirement tho jury hv nine votes to three nnswwed tho first issue in the negative. Certain law points, however, remain to bo argued. QTAC.O UNIVERSITY APPOINTMENTS. Puncdin, December 9. At a meeting of the Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland to-dny the appointment of Dr, Jack and Dr. Dunlop to tho Chnirs.of Natural Philosophy and Mental and Moral Philosophy respectively, at Otago University, was confirmed. BUTCHER BURNT OUT, Auckland, December 10. Fire at. Onehunga gutted a .butcher's shop occupied by Brookes, butchers, and owned by H. Brag and Co. The houso was insured in tho Now Zealand Office for £-110, and tho machinery, which was destroyed, in the Northern for £300. FIREMAN DISOBEYS ORDERS. Dunedin, December 10. Albert Rudingcr, a fireman on the steamer Turakiua, was fined 20s. and costs for refusing to obey tho commands of tho chief officer of tho steamer. ELECTION 3CEMES. CHrlStclmroh, December 10. There, is a conflict of evidence regarding certain occurrences at Lyitcltou last night, when "specials" are allowed in have hustled Labour leaders. It seems clear that "specials" tried to prevent supporters carrying Mr. M'Comhs to tho lailway platform, and also attempted to prevent Mr. M'Comhs returning thanks from the platform. Tho interference of uniformed constables on behalf of the candidate prevented the situation becoming ugly. Proceedings arc threatened on behalf of a woman who alleges that she was struck with a baton when attempting to reach tho train with her husband and child.
' EXPLOSION AT HUNTLY. Auckland, December 10. Huntly was disturbed in tho small hours of this mdrning by the sound of a loud explosion. Other explosions followed in rapid succession and alarmed ihe whole neighbourhood. It was fenced that an attempt had been made, to blow up the company's boardingholise in Hakanon Street with gelignite, but closer investigation showed that detonators only bad been used. Tho damage was not of a very serious Mature, only a few weatherboards being split. As a result of the occurrence five men who arrived in Huntly last night were taken into custody this morning, hut it is understood that the police, after making further inquiries released them. Two of the number have, however, since boon rearrested on a charge of deserting their ships in Auckland. The notice aro making a thorough investigation into the occurrence.
