AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY.
NEW PROFESSORS APPOINTED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, November 17. Vacancies created on the Auckland University College professorial staff by the resignation of Professors F. D. Brown and A. P. W. Thomas have now been filled. For the Chair of Chemistry 27 applications were received—2s from England and two from New Zealand. For the Chair of Physics there were 25 applications—l 9 from England and sis from New Zealand. Eighteen applications were received for the Chair of Biology—ls from England aiid three from New Zealand. Tho Selection Committee of : the College Council, guided and; assisted by recommendations from the English Selection Committee, of whom, tho High Commissioner (the Hon. T. Mackenzie) was one, and acting with power vested in them by the council, selected for the Chair of Physics Dr. Gwilym Owen, M.A. (Cambridge), of Liverpool. This appointment was ratified nt a meeting of tho College Council this afternoon, when the other two vacancies were also filled as follow-Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Frederick Palliser , Worley, D.Sc. (London),, a New Zealander at present engaged in research work in England; Professor of Biology, Professor. John Charles Johnson, M.A., of Cork University. Thef appomtment .of a Lecturer in Geology was referred to the Selection Committee, which will meet on Monday next to consider the three applications received—ail from Now Zealanders.
