. The Feathereton County Council met yesterday. There were present: Councillors A. D. M'Leod (chairman), John Martin, A. C. • Pearce, F. Matthews, W. Hume, Q. Donald, F. Perry, W. J. > Nix, and H. S. Riddiford. , 'Die treasurer reported receipts since last meeting as £991 6s. 5d., and bank balances of the various accounts to bo:—County fund account, dr., £3139 135.; imprest account, dr., £53 6s. 4d. f local bodies' loans account, ci\, £403 15s. 2d. ' A circular was received from the president of the New Zealand Counties' Association asking that representations be made to Parliament by way of protest against' the intention of tho Railways Amendment Bill to throw lipoii local authori-ties-the ■ cost. of safety 'appliances at level crossings. On tho motion of the chairman a resolution was passed to the effect that as the suggested protection \t railway crossings will be for the benefit of the wholo population of tho Dominion, tho cost of such works should ; be a charge on tho consolidated i rovonue. Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P., wrote advising that county councils had the power under .the County Telephones Act to purchase 'private telo- • phone lines. The chairman and Councillor Riddiford were authorised to make inquiries in regard to ■ the advisability r of the council taking over tho East Coast telephone lines.
