Hβ ingratiated himself with the Royalists until ho was regarded as their most valuable agent. Lancastro, with the- connivance of the Oporto police, was even allowed to effect the escape of a Royalist prisoner. Ho helped to smuggle arms into Portugal,' and conveyed Royalists' correspondence. abroad. He also effected the secret entry of two of the leaders—Captain Countinlio and Count Manqualde—into Portugal, and kept the Government aware of every Royalist action.
