DEFENCE COMMITTEE.

.The Employers', Farmers', and Citizens' Defence Committee met yesterday. Subsequently, a reporter was informed that the coastal steamers would bo worked to-day. The new union of wharf labourers now has a membership of over 400. The committee received a tolegram from Nelson stating that tho farmers there had formed a new Waterside Union under tho Arbitration Act, and that the steamer John was being unloaded. An offer of men and horses for use in Wellington or elsewhere was received from the Gisborne and East Coast Sheopowners' Association.
