FIRST SIGNS OF TROUBLE. (By Tolesropli.—Special GDrrospofident.) Wanganui, November 4. Great disappointment was felt here at tlio news that tlio confereiica for tho settlement of tlio striko had been fruitless. "Work proceeded as usual oil tlio local wharves to-day, but a hitch occurred on resuming after luncli regarding the unloading of tho Rogiiius, which arrived from AVcstport at midday. Tho men's statement is that, though coal 011 th« Regu'ua wan union loaded, tlioy oowddoi that tho ekipowoora on liapoa-
ing on them by sending vessels hero which their follow unionists in other ports have refused to discharge. They quoto tho Ngutoro (unloaded yesterday) as a case in point, and, though it was decided .to unload her, they consider that if the practice is continued, it will put them in an unfair position, and bring thorn into bad odour with union* ists elsewhere. Consequently, no work was dono the Hegulus, the men simply declining to respond to the call to unload her. Work on the Breeze, howover, went on as usual. A meeting of wat( l rsiders is to bo held to-night, when it is expected that matters in connection with the strike will bo discussed, and Work on tho wharves will be stopped, to onablo all members of tho union to be present. Tho Railway Department has put a patrol on tho wharves, and in tho railway yard, to see that none of its property is damaged.
