FIRES.

A fir© at Martinberongh last night completely destroyed Sl'Leod and Smith's boot factory. _ During the tiny a leak was discovered in tho mains, and the water was turned off to enablo repairs to bo made. It is alleged that one of tho men employed in tho factory upsot somo benzine, which ignited, and soon the whole, building was in flames. Practically nothing was eared, ho water being available, tho crowd stood and watched the progress of -the fire. "Tho brigade was in attendance, but wns powerless. .Tho insurances aro not yet known. , , fluokland, November 4. A ton-roomed house at Bast Tnmaki, owned by William Gordon, was burned down last night, none of tho contents being saved. Mr. Gordon, who is a recent arrival from Gisborno, bouelit the property some two montlis ago- liewas awakened about 11*30 to fed tho building blazing fiercely, and he just managed to get out in'his night attire. An insnranco policy for £450 was talieii over with the property, but tho narno of tho office affected was able. The cause of ..tho outbreak is a mystery. ■ >
