IDLE STEAMERS.

PAYING OFF AT LYTTELTON. (Br TclozrnDh—Pr«Jß Association.) Chrlstchurch, Novembor 2. The only arrival of importance on Saturday morning was tho ferry steamer Wahine. Sho camo up about 7 o'clock with a largo number of passengers. As in tho case of the Maori yesterday tho Union Company's permanent men wore told off to coal hor and the Waliino hulk was taken . alongside the steamer and work was started at 8 a.m., and continued without hitch all day. Tho permanent men did good work, and a large supply of bunker coal was put on board. No attempt was mado to load and cargo for nono had been booked. Tho ferry wharf, usually a sceno of great activity on Saturdays when tho ferry steamer and east coast Auckland stoamer are working, was unusually quiet. Tho only other steamer to enter tho inner harbour to-day was the Opouri, with a full cargo of timber. She arrived last night from Groymouth, and anchored in tho stream. At G. 30 this morning sho camo to tho wharf, and tho striko pickets wero in attendance, but thore was no intention on tho part of the ship's peoplo to rig her gear for discharging. Her crew will bo paid o(F on Mondav. The auxiliary scow Te Aroha, which arrived last night from Napier, berthed at the Gladstone pier. Out in the stream the Union Company's collier Kini lies at anchor. Sho was joined this afternoon by tho Kaitangata which arrived from Newcastle with about 2000 tons of coal. Sho was bearded bv the Health Officer and a Customs nflicer, and granted pratiquo, but was not brought into tho wharf, i Har crow will ba Raid ofi on Monday.
