The headmaster reported that the bazaar, whioh had been held in aid of the playground fund, had netted £40, which, with the receipts from the concert and picture benefit, would pay off the committee's debt. The now instruments were formally presented to the Town Band last night at the Opora House, whore an interesting concert, contributed to by the Orchestral Society, and others, took piece. The bandsmon appeared in their new uniforms. The upsetting of a lamp is said to-have beentho caußeof a fire which gutted a six-roomed house at Terrace End on Thursday night. The house was occupiod by Mrs. S. Tremaine. The risks are held by the Commercial Union Office, and comprise £200 on the house and £1.00 on the furniture. A featuro cf the fire was the explosion of oari;i*idgo3, of whioh there were a quantity in the house. ■ Some interesting features marked the church bazaar, which was held to clcßr off the debt on St. Peter's Sohool, at Terrace End. A candle-burning contest to guess time resulted in a tie, both Mrs. Playle and Mr. Wilkinson guessing 76 hours. The actual time was 75£ hours. Mr. Outram guessed within half a pound of a sheep's weight (661b.) Mrs. Withers won the naildriving, and Mrs. Buna the sawing contest. It is expected thatlihe proceeds will remove the existing debt. A sample of real Belgian pottery, ' imported for the bazaar by the Ladies' Guild, did not reach its destination, being strike-bound on the Corinthio. MABTERTON. There was a large gathering of bowlers on'the Masterton bowling green on Thursday when a series of interesting games were played. The principal game was for the Fowler Feathers, which was contested between teams skipped by Messrs. J. C. Ewington and G. Townsend. The former succeeded in holding the badge zy 23 points to 18. A big flight of homing pigeons took place from the Carterton showgrounds on Thursday. It was a bracelet event conduotcd by the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club, and was won by Drake Bros.' Nightwatch. The danger to niotoj traffio of the street lamps in the centre of the main thoroughfare of Masterton 'was again emphasised on Thursday morning when a car came into collision with one of the pillars and was completely wrecked. Fortunately the occupants escaped without injury. OTAKI. A conoert, organised by Natives to raise funds for the improvement of the Maori cemetery here, took place on Thursday when Bright 1 s Theatre was packed. The programme submitted was, on the whole, a good one. As a result of the performance £48 183. Was taken, which, together with £23 in subscriptions, will go a long way towards improving the grounds. Some thirteen men left here early this morning on horseback for Weilignton, where they will join as special police. Prior to their departure one of the leaders was kicked on the leg by a horse, with the result that he received a compound fracture. He is now in. the Otaki Hospital. ' . Whitebait caine up the river fn large quantities yesterday morning, and Borne fine catches are recorded. FEATHERSTOM. The strike is the main topio of discussion in this district et oresont. A number of farmers have already gone to Wellington to act as special constables, and a general canvass is being made to seoure other volunteers from this locality. It is anticipated that a large body of station and farm hands will be ready to proceed to' town to load produce awaiting shipment. The dairy farmers are holding a meeting tonight (Friday) to consider the'position. In the township some household supplies are reported to bo running short at the storeß.
