WHITCOMBE & TOMBS RAID.
EXTENT OJT THE DAMAQB. From inquiry made yesterday it appears that the damage at Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs, as a result of Thursriot on Lambton Quay, was confined to the plate-glass windows.. As some of the strikers found their way into the shop, it k remarkable that none of the glass bookcases were smashed in the struggle. Undoubtedly the revolvers, produced by members of the firm's staff/ saved the situation. It appears that the revolvers were empty when produced on Thursday, but yesterday the firm ordered a -supply of ammunition as an addition to their stock. ■ . • ..'■■' When the four mounted police were engaged in dispersing the crowd on Lambton Quay that evening, they pasßed by Whitcombe and Tombs'-door without realising that a, constable and a civilian were struggling inside the shop. It * was not until they turned and rode back that, the . actual rescue was effected. '.-.''•.,-
