Sir James Mills, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company of Now Zealand, arrive by the Maori from the Bouth this inornmg. Mr. 0. P. Powles, who has been sec* rotary of tho Victoria College Council during tho whole of its existence—a matter of fifteen years—has resigned that position, and his resignation has been accepted with regret by the council. Mr. Powlos will relinquish his duties on March 81 next, when he will be given a year's leavo of absence on full pay in recognition of his long and faithful services. Messrs. H. B. Fulton and Alexander Douglas, of Qtago, who have- been judging at tbo Hawko'.s Bay and Gishomo,, agricultural, shows, loft for tho south last evening. Mr. T. J. Bell, of the Bluff railway office, had received intimation of promotion to Christchureh. Mr. W. Johnson, who has for two years been manager of tho Masterton branch of the Bank of Australasia, has received notice of his transfer to Ti- ■; main, for -which place he will leave in about a week. He will be succeeded at Masterton .by Mr. 3V G. Costello, of Tiinaru. Mr. H. A. Anderson, of the Valuation Department, who left for Auokland last evening on transfer, was tho recipient of a presentation from a, number of j swimming enthusiasts before leaving. ■! The. Rev. A. L. Walker, minister of St. James's Presbyterian Church, Auck> j land, who has just returned from an eight months' holiday tour in England and on tho Continent, was welcomed back by his parishioners on Wednesday evening. The Rev. Hugh Beggs, who has been minister during the absence, of Mr. Walker, was tho recipient of a purse of sovereigns from the parishioners as a token of their high estoem. He has been called to tho Kilbirnio parish, Wellington. i Dr. E; 0. Joss, of Portland, Oregon, is at present in Australia making official inquiries regarding the Frozen meat industry on behalf of tho United States Department of Agriculture.. Dr. Joss will leave Sydney for Wellington by the Maunganui on Saturday. A promise has already been given by tho Prime Minister that every facility will be given by tho Government to enable Dr. Joss to obtain tho information required by his Department, Mr. A. A. Readdie, of Goraldine, has received notice of his appointment as registrar of births, marriages, and deaths for tho Geraldlne disiSriot as' from November 1. Mr. E. J. Lezard. Who has occupied the position of statlonmaßter at Dar-! field for nearly Bevon years, has received ' notice of transfer on promotion to Bluff as chief clerk. Mr. Charles Lewis, of HawkVs Bay, who has been on a visit to England., has returned to tho Dominion, via the Bluff. • Bishop Sadlier, of Nelson, will pay a visit to Christohurch this week. Mr. W. D. Cowie, who has been auctioneer in charge of the Pahiatua branch of tho Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, Limited, for tho past fow months, has been promoted to tho Jjivercargill branch, where he was formerly attached. Mr. Horace Griffiths, of Eketahuna, will succeed Mr. Cowio in Pahiatua.
Mr. A. Hawko, postmaster at Marten Junction, has received notice of his promotion and transfer to Boston. Mr. Hawka has boon in chargo of Marton Junction Post and Telegraph Offico for about fivo years. Mr. Arthur who for some tiino has hold the position of toller in tho Stratford branch of tho Bank of New Zealand and formerly of tho New Plymouth staff of tho bank, loft on Wednesday for Masterton, having boon transferred to the bank's branch there. Prior to his departure, ho was presented with a case of pipes as a taken of the esteem in which ho is held by his Stratford friends. Mr. C.
