There wore eighty motor-cars waiting outside the Municipal Opera House at Napier tire other night when "The Quaker Girl" was being played, Evidently the Maori wahine is just as bashful about her increasing years as tho apparently young-looking pakeha lady. During the hearing of a case at Wattara on Wednesday examining counsel quito complacently asked a Maori Woman through an interpreter her age. After a, moment's hesitation she replied with a very broad smile that eho had seen 47 summers. The dark colour of her skin and the heavy tattooing prevented a blush being seen. In' about tho first week in November the Auckland Tramway Company will have in service 160 passenger cars, and six motor omnibuses. The largo volume of traffic which will have to bo coped with during tho Exhibition has necessitated an increase in tho com* pany's rolling-stock. "Baching" does not seem to be an economical way of living* even in tho Maori mode (says tho "Taraflaki Herald"). A Maori debtor in the Court said he was on a contracting job and "bached" with several other men, the cost for each man being 16s, per week. The daylight parado of the sth (Wellington) Infantry Regiment, which was ealle dfor to-day ,hits been cancelled. Messrs. The caso reported recently in a cable message from Paris, in which M. Bertillori had offered to alloiv a transfusion of blood.from one of his arteries to save tho life of his brother, is not without parallel. Two weeks ago a similar oporation was performed at the St. Vincent Hospital in Melbourne. A young man suffering from a gastrio {rouble was reduced to such a weak state owing to tho loss of blood due to internal hemorrhage that his chances of recovery were considered remote. His brotiitcr, 'however, kvhon mado aware of his condition, offered to allow tho transfusion of blood from one of 'his arteries to the young man. Both men were placed side by side on the operating tablo, and an artery in tho healthy man's arm Was tapped. A similar opening was made m_ tho arm of tho patient, and for 35 minutes the heartbeat of tho healthy man was allowed to pump liis blood through a rubber tube into tho weakened body of his brother. Tho operation was In every way successful, as the renewed strength gained by tho patient has, since assisted .him materially in overcoming his gastrio trouble. A debt of over £8000 still remains in connection with the erection of the Seddon Memorial Technical College, at Auckland. At the meeting of the Auckland Education Board on Wednesday it was stated that Mr. George Goorgo, director of the college, proposed to appeal to the public during tho next six immtlir, for ansiatfuwo vx clearing off tio <kbt.
The T. G. Macarthy Trustees are to hold a meeting this morning to receive tho report of tho Advisory, Committee and to allocate tho moneys availablo for charitable- and educational institutions in tho Wellington district. There are. it is understood, between £5000 and £6000 to distribute. In its report tho Advisory Board has not made or oven suggested how tho money should ho allocated, but has suggested general lines on which tho trustees should proceed in dividing tho money between tho thirty-three applicants. A question conoerning the Dominion's place in tho Empire Naval Defence schema was raised by Sir Joseph Ward in tho Houso of Representatives yesterday. He gave- notice to ask; tho I Prime Minister: "Whether tho British Government 'informed tho New Zealand ; Government in writing of their decision to alter an honourable arrangement' i made with the Prime Minister of New i Zealand in writing oil August 1, 1909, undertaking to have two Bristol cruisers, throe destroyers, and two submarines dispatched to and to remain, in Now Zealand waters, and if any protest in writing or otherwise against such breach of an honourable arrangement Waß made by tne Now Zealand Government, and if all correspondence regarding samo will be laid upon the table of tho House." Aji expert Wairara.pa gardener, according to an ©xchango, states that he does not think thero will bn halTa ten of stone fruit in tho whole of the Mastorton orchards this season. The frost of 6 waek or* two back Worked havoo in tho orchards. The steamer Talmie, which teadte3 from Auckland to the Cook Islands and Tahiti, recently landed at Aitutaki two motor-cars which, she had carried from Rarotonga. The natives of that, largo atoll of tho Cook group—have already embarked upon all the delights of "joy rides," and tho taxis are expected to establish a: very profitable business. The oho diffioulty about motoring at Ait/utaki is . that thero is only one place to go to —. the_ end of the one road, bo that the native who wants to da the outing on a grand scale goes several times. Two draught horses, valued at £80, the property of Mr. J. Johnson, of Te Aroha, were run down by the ThamesFrankton train on Saturday, and were killed on tho spot (writes the "Herald's" To Arolia correspondent). It appears that tho horses were feeding close to the lino in Mr. Johjrsoii'e paddock, while, the driver was away at lunch, A little Maori' child crossed tho lino through tho railway gates, leaving them open. Tho horsos, on the approach of the train, made a rush to cross the lino, and were struck. Boi;h animals wero terribly mutilated, and died almost immediately.
