PRICE OF COMMODITIES.

STILL ON THE RISE. At tho market yesterday potatoes were sold for as high, as £9 per ton—a rise of £4 10s. a'ton for tho week. A merchant stated yesterday that if tho strike continued for a few days longer, tho price would go up to £12 per ton, as it was impossible to got in supplies from the south, whilst tho present state of things continued. Sugar is also at a preniium, and the market is all but denuded of wholesale quantities, some- of tho merchants being clear of stock. If tho strike did not end soon means would be taken to import stocks from the north, which up till the present time merchants have hesitated to do, owing to tho prohibitive Tailway freight fates. The chargo for bringing sugar down from Auckland by rail is £8 17s. Id., as against 13s. 6d. by steamer. Chaff is getting scaroo, and is gradually firming in value. Oats are in good supply at from 2s. fid.-to 3s. per bushel. Thero is still a sharp set demand for coal, and local stocks are rapidly decreasing.
