PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held last night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. J. AV. M'Ewan), and Councillors Forsyth, List, Cox, Broeldebank, Anderson, Findlay, Townsend, Jones, and 'J'rueinan. In reference to the Wilford Settlement a letter was received from tho Commissioner of Crown Lands stating that, tho estimate of £37 10s, per chain for reading had been approved, and asking that, tho work be put in hand-as' early as possible. Instructions were given to the engineer to proceed with the work. Mr. T. 31. AYilford advised that ho had received a letter from tlio Hon. A, L. Herdman in reference to the proposed boat harbour, in which he stated' that the Statutes Revision Committee had refused to accept the clause in relation to it. Mr. AVilford stated that he intends to test tho feeling of Parliament- on tlio matter and to more tlio clause when tho Bill comcs into Committee.
From tho samo sourco another letter was received in which tho writer stated that lie would do his best to sec that a clauso was inserted in tho Mimicipal Corporations Bill in. reference to empowering tlio running of municipal picture shows. Councillor Forsyth asked, in view of the strike being prolonged, how much coal they had in stock at tho municipal gasworks. The Mayor replied that they had 700 tons, sufficient to last the gasworks for three months. It was decided to pay general labourers overtime rates for all work dono over eight hours in twenty-four. Application was mado - by Captain White for permission to erect a tent on tlio beach for the sale of soft drinks, etc., and expressing his willingness to pay for tho rights of the same. Tho matter was referred to tho engineer and sanitary inspector for a report. • The circular letter from the Thames Borough Council, proposing improvements in connection with the slaughtering of pigs and asking co-operation was received. It was decided to ask tho inembor for tho district to support tlio matter. _ The secretary of the Municipal Association advised that the association had received intimation from the Minister of Internal Affairs to the effect that tho Government- could not seo its way to make the suggested amendment re rates on workers' dwellings. The Department of Lands and Survey forwarded a copy of the Order-in-Couucil appointing tho council a Domain Board ti control the Petone Domain. The engineer to the Gear Companywrote to the effect that ho thought tho council would provide a connection for tho company's nine-inch drain. ■ Tho matter was referred to tho engineer to report on.
