PAYING OFF CREWS.

STEP TAKEN BY UNION CO. According to a statement made by Mr. W. A. Kennedy, local manager for tho Union Company, it has been decided to,pay off the cretfs of tho Komata, Wairuna, Poherua, and Mararoa at Wellington to-day. If there is not sufficient labour offering to discharge other colliers, tho Union Company will probably pay off tho -crews of those steamers, and lio them up. The company has decided not to receive any outward cargo to-day. This decision has been come to in view of the probability that the waterside workers at other New Zealand ports might refuse to unload cargo which had been placed in the vessels by free labour, at this port. As far as could be ascertained yesterday, an endeavour will bo made to run the passenger steamers to time.
