THE HAWKE'S BAY SHOW.

ITS JUBILEE. THE PROGRESS OF FIFTY YEARS. .(By Telegraph—Special Reporter.) Napier, October 22. Tho'Jubilee Hawko's Bay Show was opened on the Hastings Racecourse today in glorious weather. The attendance- was large. The first show was held in Havolock in 1863, the second in Havelock in 1866, the third at Meanee in 1887, and, in October, 1874, Hastings was chosen,as the locale. 11l 1863 the entries, totalled 73. This week they number 2274. One fowl and three dogs helped to constitute the 73 referred to. The balance consisted of 22 horses, 23 cattle, 18 sheep, and 6 pigs. The following figures show how tlio entry list lias grown:—lß63, 73 entries; 1903, 1D72 entries; 1904, 2035 entries; 1905, 1717 entries; 1900, 1762 entries; 1907, 1600 entries; 1908, 1980 entries; 1909, 2114 entries; 1910, 1940 ontries; 1911, 2236 entries; 1912, 2267 entries; 1913, 2274 ontries. Soon the annual exhibition will be staged in the beautiful grounds recently purchased from Mr. William Nelson. This land is at Tomoana, eleven miles from Napier, and one mile from Hastings. The main purchase is a block of 51 acres, which was obtained for £5319. When the purchase was announced in the society's 1912 report, the proposal was put forward that the cost of the land should be met voluntarily. Mr. Coleman headqd the list with £500, and a promise of £500 when tlio amount required was collected. The annual report, a year later, stated that £2983 had been paid on the land, which indicates that, — donations flowed in freely. An additional seven or eight acres adjoining the main block has since been acquired .for £100. Record entries and fiho quality are the features of the stock at this year's show. Only half the horses are judged yet, and many will not bo seen on the ground till to-morrow. The draughts are very good, and represent the best of Hawke's Bay, and the strong studs in Taranaki and Manawatu. . Notwithstanding the popularity of the motor, the harness horse division is still patronised by an army of horseflesh good to see. Hawke's Bay has long been a homo of the Shorthorn. To-day the Show Grounds was the rendezvous for somo of the finest specimens of the big beef breed which ever graced a Ting. Hawke's Bay annexed both championships—Mr. Douglas M'Lean the bull premiership, and Mr. W. J\ Williams in the class for cows. A splendid run. of success attended Mr. Douglas M'Lean's Shorthorns. Thoy won nine first, one second, four thirds, one championship, and one reserve championship. The catering of the society, for the* other beef breed— the Hereford—was less patronised, but stock of the finest quality was penned. The exceptionally good beasts entered by Mr. Ernest Short, of Eeilding, had' a notable success —all the firsts, both championships, and both reserves championships. Polled Angus honours were divided between Messrs. A. S. G. Carlyon and J. A. Macfarlane. The frugal Ayrshire had excellent representatives iii the stock of Messrs. T. H. Coleman and C. E. C. Webb. Holstein honours lie with Mr. W. I. Lovelock, and there is no monopoly of prizes, in the Jersey division. The sheop section is naturally one of the very strongest features, and the judges - have almost all .expressed them selve3 as satisfied that tlio'" collect ion of sheep has rarely been excelled in New -Zealand. A great deal of judging remains to be done tomorrow., . 0 , THE LIST OF HONOURS. 1 CLASSES FOR HORSES. •; „ Napier, October 22. i Entire pony, 13.2 hands—Charlie < AYakelyn, 1; J.; W..
