WATERING' BUTTER.
PRACTICE IN VANCOUVER. The practice indulged in by some traders in Vancouver of adding water to New Zealand butter was brought under the notice ot fife Minister for Agriculture by a question in the Houso of Representatives. Tho Hon. AV. F. Massey made the following statement in reply to tho question in tho Houso yesterday:—"Reports .regarding the' pracfic'o which seems to have obtained in Canada of adding water to New Zealand butter having reached tlio Government, its agent in Vancouver was authorised in N March last to obtain legal advice, and to take proceedings if circumstances warranted. In the meantime, however, the Canadian Government brought two prosecutions, arid fines wero inflicted on the ofl'onders. The New Zealand agent was' thereupon instructed to keep the, matter in view, and to prosecute if a case could be obtained. Tho Canadian Government is mjw being asked not to allow its officers to relax their vigilance." Once upon a time there was really no assistance for the cheese-maker; be lind to take "pot luck" with whatever crude apparatus came his way.
