SHIPWRIGHTS' STRIKE.
MEN STILL FIRM. In regard to the shipwrights' strike, tlio only now feature is that the men appear more firm. If fiia present position lasts, those concerned state tlicir intention of seeking new employment, and this in new of the coming summer they anticipate no difficulty in., finding. They stato that they are determined not-'to return to work under the conditions formerly prevailing. . _ •\t a meeting of tho Waterside Workers' -Union to-day about 300 being oresent, the question of tlio shipwrights' uosition camo up for consideration and the position of the • various slip and yard workers was discussed. Tlio matter stressed by tho speakers was the reduction in the travelling time. It- was stated that tlio loss of this "time means a matter of ss. or 6s.< less a week, and this has caused discontent. It was decided to call a special "stop-work" meeting to-morrow. At this meeting it is intended to placo before the waterside workers tho claims of tho strikers, and tlio question of the travelling to Evan's Cay. It lias been suggested) that carpenters will do tho work of tlio shipwrights, but this suggestion •is discounted (by the parties oil tlio men's side) by tlio fact that the shipwrights h.ivo already met tho carpenters and the latter have stated their intention of not touching tlio strikers' work. Tlio position, as placed before a Dominion reporter last night by a prominent member of tho union was that 32''men were asking tlio sanio conditions that 1600 other men were at present enjoying. Tlio society was one of tlio first formed in Wellington, being established in 1873. • Since then its members had never given any trouble to tho employers.
