Vioe-Hegat,. His Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Liverpool have issued invitations to a dance which is to be held at Government House on Tuesday next, October 28. Dancing will commence at 9.30 p.m. Sir John Fuller, Governor of Victoria, met witlh a rather serious accident in Wiltshire on Saturday last, and was removed t« a nursing home in London. Ho has slightly improved, but expects to be detained for a fortnight.—Press Association. Colonel E. S. Heard, Acting-Com-mandant of Now Zealand Forces, left for the south by tho Wahino last ovening. Mr. G. H. Scalos will arrive from tho south this morning by tho Mararoa. Mr. A .K. Dyne, who succeeded Mr. M. Vance as stationmaster at Manga- . tainokn six months ago, has received nofcico of his promotion to Thomdon (Wellington), where ho will act as officer in charge of tho booking offico. Mr. T. Short, who has been chief clerk at Mangatainokn for tho past two years, has been promoted to the position of stationmaster at that station. A few years apo Mr. Short was a member of the Paltiatua railjvay staff. Mr. H. Hardcastle, who has been appointed to carry out aJi extensive scheme of advertising for tho Auckland Exhibition, arrived in Wellington on Saturday morning, and' Went on to Christchurch by the Mararoa. Mr. William Thomas Mason died suddenly in Blenheim on Sunday (says a Press Association message). He was born in Kent sixty-eight years agio. The deceased took part in tho Maori War, as a member of the 43rd Regiment. Ha retired from the Police Force about four years ago. ;Ho was tho last of tho sergeant-majors in the police in the Dominion. Ho served' under Coloiiel Whitmore in the West Coast campaign _ in 1868-69, and was present at various actions, including Okotuku and Nulnimaru. He held the New Zealand War and long-service medals. Mr. James Ames, City Valuer, _ who has undergone a severe illness, is reported t© be making a satisfactory recovery. Ho expects to be about again in a week or two. Tho death occurred on Saturday at "Bhyme," tho family residence, Hankey Street, of Mr. Edward Langden Anderson, second son of Mr. David Anderson, one of Wellington's best respected citteens. The interment took place at tho Bolton Street Cemetery yesterday afternoon, tho Rev. A. M. Johnson officiating at tho graveside. Mr, Schlesingor, of Christchurch, arrived on Sunday by the Rimutiika after a twelve months' tour in England, and left for. the south yesterday. ' Captain C. Kelsall returned to Palaerston last night, after Staying a few days in Wellington. Mr. G. Elkingtoti, who has been staving at tho Empire Hotel, returned to' Masterton yesterday. Mr. W. J. Wall and Mr. C. Blom field left Wellington for Hastings yesterday. Mr. W. Appleby, stationmaster at Woodville, has been transferred to Dafinevirko. Watts, of the Auckland Harbour Board staff, was presented with a purse of sovereigns on Friday evening on the occasion of his resignation after 28} years of servioe. The board's engineer (Mr. W. H. Hamer) niade the presentation, and spoke of tho high re- ' ! gard in which Mr. Wattß was held by the staff. , i Mr. H. A. Scott, maflaser at Palmerston of Messrs. J. J. Niven and Co. a engineering woxks for the past' five and a half years, has resigned to take up farming in the Kaitieke district, Upper Wanganui. He took a keen interest in temperance and religious work, and ho was also a much-travelled man, having spent a number of years in South Africa and America.
