CONDITIONS ON COASTER^,
A conforenco was held yesterday af< ternoon between representatives of the Merchant Service Guild and the. ehipy owners in regard to the pay and work-" ing conditions of officers' on coastal steamers. The employers wero represented by tho Wellington executive of tho Shipowners' Federation with Mr. Rodgcrs (Anchor Line, Nelson), and Captain Hammond (Auckland). _ Tho guild representatives were Captain D« J. Watson (secretary), and Mr. J. Croix ty (mate of tho Stormbird). Tho own* ers declined ,to entertain the question of payment of overtimo to officers, and 1 after somo discussion tho guild rcprosentatives undertook to again refer tha matter to their principals in order to ascertain if any proposal could bo mada by tho guild to obviats tho difficulty. The owners announced 1 thoir willingness to oonsidor any reasonable demands aa to iucreaso of pay.
