RULES ABOUT OUTSIDE WORK. In answer to a requost by tho Hon. J,' A. Millar in tho House of Representor tives that tho Prime Minister should obtain from the .Public Sorvico Commissioners a definite pronouncement of their policy in regard to members of tho Public Service or their wives engaging' in any business, , tho Prime Minister; made tho following statement in ther. House yosterday:— "This matter has been considered on.' sovoral occasjons by _ the Public Sorvico Commissioners since they assumed; office, but it. has not so far .appeared possible to them to make a regulation prohibiting tho wives of members of the Public Sorvico engaging in any business without inflicting injustice in many cases. At present vivos of members j of tho Public Sorvico aro known to bo; employed in such positions as that o6 : shorthand writer in private firms, whilo others are understood to keep paying; guestß, teach musio, and engage in Other matters of tho kind. Tho Public Sorvico Commissioner states that ho is, however, of tho opinion that the wife of a member of tho Publlo Sorvico should not cugago in any business which isi likely to interfere with tho official du-, ties of hor husband, or which wouldj give colourable roason to Bupposo that tho business, conducted by tho wifo might even in a romoto way be assisted' by tho official position of her husband. Ho further states that it is proposed to 1 take up cases of tho kind as they coma untlor notice, and to take such action ir* each caso as may seem necessary.
