EASTBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
DAY'S BAY GROUNDS. A meeting of tlic Eastbourne Borough Council was held last evening, tho Mayor, Mr. W. J. Organ, presiding. The matter of the grounds at Day's Bay was discussed at sonic length, councillors being unanimous in expressing opinions that steps should be taken in the direction of acquiring the land. It was suggested by the Mayor that the council should approach tho City Council with the view that co-operative action should be taken to this end. The Eastbourne Borough Council alone could not do this, not having the necessary means. Tho help of tho Eastern Harbour Association and tho Eastbourne Beautifying Society should also be solicited. Tho Mayor eventually moved that a subcommittee be set up, consisting of councillors Button, Kelly and the Mayor, and that they meet a. sub-committee of tho City Council with a view to discussing tho matter. As some of tho land has already been sold, immediate action was necessary if this well-known beauty spot was to be preserved for the people. Councillor Button recognised that it was a matter roauiring urgent notion, and he thought that a public subscription should be raised, and urged that a public meeting should be held in the Town Hall, so that the position could be put before tho people of Wellington. Tho Ferry Board roport was submitted. It stated that the manager, Captain Cambridge, took up his duties on October 9. Captain G. B. Evans was anpointed to command the Duchess. The rovision of fares and freights is now receiving attention. Arrangements have been completed for the holding of a large picnic excursion on Labour Day, and to cope with the expected increased traffic another boat has been chartered for that day. It has been found necessary to submit several matters which have arisen between the Ferry Board and tho Wei-, lington Harbour Ferries to arbitration. The Ferry Bfiard recommended _ tho council to authorise certain expenditure on tho Muritai Park.
