NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

THIRD DAY'S RESULTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedin, October 15. io .New Zealand Golf championship mooting was continued at Baimacowan j i cs jostorday, when the fimt round amateur championship and the ro , unt ]. t' lo professionals' match 'S ?. °*1 111 tbo morning and a bogy match in the afternoon. The day brolce no and sunny and at 9 o'clock the weather condition!, were of the most piomiMiig description. The wind was •ui 4i su fl '!' c I lpnt strength to interfere l tlio flight of tile balls to any vcrv _ pprecmblp extent, though it increased in a considerable measure as tho day wore on. There was a pronounced adt ion to the number of spectators, and icse wero rewarded by somo line disp ajs, several of tho contests both in tli© amateur championship and the professionals match being very line. The finest contest was that in the profes- ™ . match between W. B. Simpson Wellington) and F. G. Hood (Aueltj.n I , s Doing carried to the nineteenth hole, after Simpson ivas 3 down with 5 holes to go. Going out the first two holes were halved in 5. The next uent to Hood. Hood played tlie following seven holes in average 4's, and got tli© turn in 38, 8 up on Simpson, who was 41. Both halved, tho tenth no o m 3, mid tho next three wero halved m bogy, leaving Simpson still 3 tlowji. Simpson won tho next two in tour and throe and halved tho next In d and tho seventeenth in 4, making tho game dormy 1. Both shots to the lawn were in good position, but flood s approach was short, and Simpson took the hole in 3, making all square at the eighteenth. Both got fino drives to the nineteenth, and Simpson s second found the high ground to the right of the hole, but short, and Hood was in a good position on tho ii ground. Simpson approached we I, but Hood overran tho hole, and faded, to take the chance of squaring after Simpson missed his next putt. The two players had a good following over tho last- few holes. Simpson's win was greeted with applause. Tho cofitest between Sl'Ewan (Wairarapa) and Watt (Wellington) was also, responsible for somo good golf. M'Ewan sot out well, winning tho first two holes in four. Tho third was halved in 4 and at the fourth M'Ewan required 3 putts and lost. Watt captured tho next liolo in 2, making the game all square. Watt won tho next, making a mashie shot dead, wjiile M'Ewan missed a yard putt for a half. Tho next hole wont to M'Ewan and the following one to Watt. Tho ninth was halved in 4, Watt being thus 1 up, at tho turn. The tenth was halved in 3. and at the next. Watt's third found the ditch, but lifting, he holed a fino mashie approach and won in 5. Tho next holo was halved in 4, M'Ewan being 'unfortunate in being laid a half stymie. Tlio next two holes were halved in 4 and 3 respectively. M'Ewan drove on to the green at the sixteenth and won in 3. Tlio next was halved, Watt being 2 up' with 1 to go. 'fhoro was nothing remnrkablo in tho other two draws. D. Hood (Christchurch) won rather easily from Milliner (Ashburton) and in the caso of the Clements (Christchurch) and Stewart (Napier) game play was dormy seven, and was settled at the next hole, where Clements made no mistakes. He got the turn in 37 and did the next three holes in 3, 4, and 5 respectively. Stewart was putting badly. The play in tho amateur championship was responsible for some, good contests. A. D, S. Duncan (Wellington) secured a victory over G. L. Cuthbertson (Invcrcargill), but not so easily as many had expected. The game lay all square at the twelfth hole, but Duncan seemed tho next two and after a square at Bishopscourt got the Gorge, thus winning 3 up and 2 to play. B. B. Wood (Christchurch) beat J. Goss (Wanganui) at the 14th hole. B. L. Taylor (Wellington) finished on tlio same green against C. W. Seymour (Timaru), as also did B. J. Smith ;""Miist H. Brasch (both of Dunedin). "a. Ross finished against B. C. Rutherford (Christchurch). At the fifteenth hole Ross was playing a fine game. Another interesting contest with a rrood finish was that between H. E. Wright (Christchurch) and A. H. Fisher (Dunedin). At the fourteenth .holo the game lay 2 up in Wright's favour. Bishopscourt was halved ill 4's, Wrieht failing to secure a possible 3. The Gorge was squared'in 4's and tho game lav dormy 2. Fisher's drive to tlio 17th hole found tho rough near the ditch and ho was forced to play short for safety. Wright's second found tho rough to the left of the green, and, getting out from tho long grass, ho lay a good distance from the hole, and taking two more putts Fisher got the hole, making tho match dormy 1. Going to tlio lawn both placed their iron shots over the ditch, but just short of the pin, Wright lying just inside tho green and Fisher on tlio edge. Both lay a few feet from tlio hole with their seconds, and Fisher was given a chanco to carry tho game to tho next hole, Wright missing the putt. "Tho Dunediii man missed also, however, and Wright finished 1 up. F. Ross (Auokland) and R. L. D. Kidston (Wellington) wero dormy 2, and for a moment it seemed as if tho match must go to tho last green. Ross's second ran under the tall macrocarpa hedgo on the left of the green, but from an uncomfortablo stance, and with his stroke impeded by a fence just behind tho ball, ho laid his shot practically dead. Kidston had played a good second nicely on to the green, and the holo was squared in 4, leaving Ross 2 up and Ito play. Ross is tho only Auckland player who survived tho qualifying rounds, and* his progress will bo watched with interest.

An interesting contest took place between J. E. Park (Dunedin) and J. C. Templer (Timaru), tho match being carried to the nineteenth liolo for decision in Park's favour.
