THE GENEE SEASON.

The world-famous dancer, Adeliuo Gence, and the lmporial Russian Ballet, will commence a season of seven nights at the Opera House on October 25 in a programme that should provide-a unique and' pleasurable experience to theatregoers of this city. Tho great dancer, who has been a frequent entertainer of royalty, will be seen in a ballet that she has made peculiarly her own —"Coppelia"—which is based on Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffmann." "Coppelia" might be described as a "two-act comedy," for it is full of tho quaintest humour, and unfolds a most interesting story of nil old toymaker, who is hoaxed into believing 110 has transmitted life into ono of his mechanical figures. Geneo, during the second act-, assumes the character of tho doll, and is said to reveal herself right through the performance, not only as a dancer of incomparabjo grace, but as a highly-gifted comedienno. The famous Russian dancer, M. Volinin will support the "star" in "Coppelia" in tho part of Franz, the simple village youth, who falls in- lovo with the doll. The ballet is enriched by moro than a dozen dance features of a most interesting character, executed by Gonee, M. Volinin, and the Imnerial Russian Ballet. 111 addition to "Coppelia," another ballet of a totally different character will be presented for tho first four nights of the season. v This is "Les Sylphides," which will be enhanced bv the music of Chopin, notably the well-known "Prelude" and "Nocturne," and several of the mazurkas and waltzes, including the "Waltz in I) Flat" and the "Waltz in E Flat." Tho ballet is performed in a beautiful woodland setting, tho dancers being dressed in the long floating draperies of the old school. Geneo, it is stated, aroysed tremendous enthusiasm in Sydney and Melbourne by her performance as tbe First Sylph, whilst Mdlles. Halina, Schmolz, and Vlasta Novotna also received (treat prai.se as the Second and Third Sylph respectively. Not the least interesting portion of a programme is Divertissements, which is a series of solo and concerted dances by the principals and the Imperial Russian Ballet. Tho principal item is the pnlka violette, by M. Volinin nnd'Halinn Schmolz. There will also bo included the Chinese dance, the gavotte "Cupid," and "The Swan," tlie latter two being presented by Halina Schmolz, whilst Vlasta Novotna ond Sinria Zalewska will be seen in the Australian Soldiers' Dance.
