CRICKET. MEETING OF MID-WEEK CONTROL. The annual meeting of tlio Wednesday Cricket Association was held at tho Now Zoalandor Hotel last night. Mr. A. A. George presided. Tile annual report statod that Jast season the senior championship for'the Simmonds and Osborne Shield was competed for by six teams, and was again won by the Union Club. Tho Rivals Chib was runner-up. Tho junior championship for tho Winder Cup brought out seven teams, and was won by Oriental Club. Union was runner-up. Two teams visited Auckland, and both suffered defeat, tho seniors by 211 runs, tho juniors by an innings and 42 runs. Two matches with tho Canterbury Thursday Association were played here. Wellington won both tho senior by ten wickets, and the junior by eight wickets. The financial position was not as satisfactory as it might be. Tho bat presented by Messrs. Duncan and M'lntosh had been won by the Rev. E. 0. Blamires. A Capital Enterprise. Tho following reference was made to tho tour of tho South Melbourne team: •"Tho undertaking, resulting as it did with but a small loss to this association, was without doubt one of the finest and boldest achievements that has ever been promoted in Now Zealand, even by larger' and wealthier bodies. The organisation of the trip was. by no means an easy task. Innumerable difficulties wore experienced in bringing negotiations to a successful issue, but tho unbounded enthusiasm displayed, aiid tho determined work of your committee surmounted ovory obstacle, and what appeared to many an impossible proposition turned out a striking reality as well as an unqualified buccgss. Tho team that visited us was a strong combination in every respect, and this association is greatly indobted to the officials of, the South Melbourne Club for tho caro. thoy exorcised in choosing their representatives. Our visitors were possessed with a fino spirit of.comradeship, and wherever they went they, by tlioir genial dispositions, won the hearts of <?ach and everyone. To Mr. Baragwanath, president of the South Melb'ourno Club, who accompanied tho team in his official capacity and as a player, much indeed is duo as an outcome of the tour. Of Mr. MacCormack, .the manager of the team, too much indeed cannot be said, his. tact and unselfish behaviour throughout tho whole tour will long be remembered by your committee, as well as (we feel sure) by tho members of his own team. To tho captain of tho visiting team, Mr. G. H. S. Trott, your committee is extremely indebted. ' His good fellowship, both on and off tho field, was as generous, as it was spontaneous, and tho result of the tour added another laurol to his already long list of good generalship. Auckland Asleep. If (continues the report) the Auckland Cricket Association had exhibited a truo sporting spirit, and liad carried out the arrangements made with our representative, Mr. Crouch, tho trip would liavo been a decided success from a financial point of view. Unfortunately, tho Auckland Association played a very poor part in respect to tho tour, and their offer of a match towards tho end of tho tour on lines tliat wo had originally offe'fed simply confirmed • the weakuess your committee feel called upon to rofer to. To the Mayor of Auckland, for receiving the visiting team in the generous manner In which lie did, your committee offer its cordial thanks. .From the beginning to tho end tho tour was one of unbroken pleasure, and from a cricketing point of view one of great profit. We feel suro this association has done much by carrying out this tour for tho good of cricket in New Zealand." Tho South Melbourne team played nine matches, of which thoy won seven, lost one, and on© was drawn. , The report was adopted. The bal-ance-sheet has not yet been received, from tho auditor.
