TYPHOID. IN A MENTALHOSPXTAL. Auckland, October 8. There is at present a small epidemic of typhoid fever at the Auckland Mental Hospital. One case, that of a female patient 47 years of ago, terminated fatally yesterday morning, while four other inmates are suffering from the disease, The Coroner, Mr. IS. C. Cutten, 5.31., held ail inquest at the institution this morning. l)r. 13eattio (superintendent) stated that sovcral cases of typhoid occurred every year among tho patients, and he did not anticipate tho diseaso would bo entirely eliminated until tho new drainage system was installed. He expected it to bo completed in about 18 months. "HEMMED IN BY FIRE." LADY BOARDER'S PREDICAMENT. Auckland, October 8. A boardinghouse in Park Avenue, known as tho Terrett, was destroyed bv firo early this morning. One boarder (Miss Lynch), while getting on the balcony, found herself hemmed in by flames. Wrapped in a quilt, she rushed through the flames. She was slightly scorched, and escaped without sorious injury. Tho building owned by Neumegen and occupied by Mrs. Cameron, was insured for £1300. in the National, and the contents were insured in the Now Zealand offico for £500. yacht matanci. Cisborno, October 8. The yacht. Matangi, which left Wellington under peculiar circumstances on September 20, arrived here this morning from Napier where repairs wore effect cd. Sbo arrived off Gisborne at 2 o clock yesterday afternoon, and hovcto all night on account of the severe westerly gale during which she shipped a largo amount of water. She made the river at 10.10 a.m. to-day. She will continue her voyage to Auckland when tho weather clears. THE PRISONER'S ACT. Nelson, October 8. Charles Herbert Shaw, arrested for drunkenness yesterday morning, attempted to commit suicide in tho gaol in tho afternoon by cutting bis' throat with a pannikin. Shaw is now in the Hospital. GAOLED FOR CRUELTY. Marton, October 8. Bpuamy Beethani. for ill-treating a horse that was in low condition, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Ho had been before the Court twice previously. TIMARU LOAN POLL. Tlmaru, October 8. A poll of Timaru ratepayers was taken to-day on the question of raising three loans of £10,000 to complete tho underground drainage, £5000 to purchase a stone quarry and plant, and £2500 to level and improve a recreation reserve. The polling was light, but all the proposals were carricd. AN UNHAPPY BODY. Titliaru, October 8. The serious dispute which exists be'Vo®l.l 10 a °tive section of tho men's, division of the St. John Ambulance Association and tho staff officers over finance and authority has caused the new Ambulance Hall to remain idle since it was formally opened some months ago. Tho dispute was further, ventilated last' night at the annual meeting of tho division. The leaders spoke very strongly against the staff officers, and tho subcentixi and'officers put in their resignations, but on request, agreed t6 date them from the end of the present month in order to give time lor tho sub-centre at Christchurch to hold an inquiry if it should see fit to do, so. If the officers resign most of the members will follow suit. COMMITTED FOR TR|AL. Invercargill, October 8. Two youths, named James Foley and Charles M'Cash, were charged at tho Magistrate's Court with having broken and entered the jeweller's shop of A. E. Arthur and stealing therefrom jewellery to tho value of £254. They were committed for trial, bail being allowed, each in two sureties of £300. THE DEFENCE ACT. Invercargill, October 8. A batch of youths' were before the Magistrate's Court this morning for having failed to render personal service as required by the Defence Act. A conviction was recorded in each instance, and fines were inflicted in some instances up to £2. \
PROPERTY SALE. Messrs. J. H. Bethune and Co. held a property auction at their rooms yesterday, when tliero was a largo attendance. A leasehold property in Mulgravo Street, having a frontage of GOft. lin. by a depth of 103 ft. Hill., with two-story dwelling, "Aorangi House," thereon, was sold to Mr. J. B. Foster for ,£625. A' property at Creswick, ICarori, containing an area of 3 acres 2 roods 2 perches, with two dwellings thereon, sold under instructions from tlio Registrar of the Supremo Court, was knocked down to Mr. Goodbehere, as agent, at >£480. Four dwellings in Elizabeth Street, a York Bay property, and a section at Karori were also offered, but, not reaching the reserves, aro in the hands of the auctioneers for private sale. Messrs. Harcourt and Co., Wellington, acting on instructions received from the Registrar of the Supremo. Court, will sell by public auction nt their rooms, Panama Street, on Wednesday, October 2D, freehold property with a frontago of G(i feet to Worser Bay Road, Miramar.
